Introducing kayaking moving water skills on a Grade I/II river in Wales
The weekend provides 2 days of training to control your boat on Grade I/II white
water. If your looking to move from flat water paddling and start to experience
the river environment this weekend is great to improve confidence and increase
your toolbox of skills. During the summer months the river levels are mainly
low, making the training relaxed with warmer water.

Techniques and skills covered include:
- Forward paddling, capsize drills, support Strokes.
- Edging, bow rudder, stern rudder, controlling your speed.
- Reading the river, eddies, hazards, group safety, planning.
- Active blade skills, breaking out/in, ferry gliding.
- Kayaking equipment required for warm safe paddling.
Day one
After a relaxing welcome and with a brew at the centre, the day starts with
a flat water session to introduce or improve on skills required for Grade II
white water paddling. In the afternoon the group will be introduced to river
features and hazards that we find on moving water. The river trip will be five
miles on a gentle GradeI/II section of the river Wye. The day will be spent
making you comfortable and confident on the river, using personel skills and
group river running techniques. The focus is on safety and making you feel confident
and in control.
Day two
The second day is all about the river trip. This will give you a chance to improve
your skills and travel 5 miles downstream. You will get the chance to experience
surfing a small river wave, improve ferry gliding and tune up your river reading
and boat control skills. The aim is to make you more confident in moving water
and give you a set of kayaking techniques to practice. This course will give
you a greater understanding of Grade I/ II river skills. Personal feedback will
be given throughout the weekend and advice to progress your paddling.
